OUR OWN JOURNEY FROM 
STRESSED TO STOKED

On Christmas Eve of 2012, we got a call from our finance manager, telling us we didn’t have enough money to make payroll.

We’d been running our wind and solar company for 5 years and it was struggling, along with a second company we owned that we’d just made a significant investment into.

As we looked at each other, worried about how we were going to pay our employees, we felt the full weight of not only being business owners but of being leaders — of having so many people counting on us to pay them so they could support their families and provide their kids with a normal Christmas.
We knew we had to find the money, and after pulling from our kids’ college funds and a few other places, we gathered enough to make that payroll. It was the last way you’d want your business to end the year...or start a new one.

Our business challenges extended far beyond that, though. The wind and solar industry had pivoted and we weren’t prepared for it. Despite having very limited cash, we desperately needed to reinvent our services and our company to stay relevant and survive.

We had no idea what the future held or how to fix our business. To make matters worse, we didn’t have a community of people who understood what we were going through, who we could be vulnerable with, and ask for help. It was an incredibly lonely and scary place to be.
The only thing we DID know was that quitting was not an option. We knew we had the fire and the commitment to do whatever was necessary to make sure our business survived — for our employees, for ourselves, and for our family.

So, we got to work. We took a deep, hard look at our business and assessed our biggest problems. We learned our business — and our industry — through and through and became full-on experts in our field. And we scrutinized our team and our company culture, making sure we had people working for us who were committed to rallying around the vision.
Thankfully, it worked. After a lot of effort, sweat, tears, and trial and error, we successfully made it through that crisis. Our company not only survived, it transformed, becoming the largest independent service provider in our industry with over 500 men and women working in the field across the US. In 12 months, we took our business from the worst year on record, to breaking revenue records. We were even awarded California Small Business of the Year, by the Small Business Association, before selling the company in 2019.

As entrepreneurs, we’ve built and sold multiple companies. We’ve also interviewed, hired, trained, and managed thousands of employees to date.
Even in our darkest hours of that crisis, we told ourselves one thing: when we make it through this, we’re going to share what we’ve learned. We’re going to help others and teach them the tried and true business tactics that worked for us, so that YOU can put them to work for your success, too.
